Windows 7 on Samba

Hello all,

First, I would like to say that this is my first time again setting up an ubuntu server with windows clients, so I'm pretty sure I'm just missing something altough I have no idea what. My admin skills is pretty weak (I have had experience with setting up a windows network recently, and a linux network wayyyy back some years ago) so please forgive any noobness before hand.

So I have successfully entered my windows 7 client into the linux server thru samba, but when I try to log in in windows I keep receiving the error

"There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request".

I've installed samba 3.5.3, and a dns server (which I haven't touched yet). I've also installed a dhcp server. I haven't installed a kerberos or ldap yet.

I haven't run into this problem, but I can refer you to the best Samba reference I have found: Samba by Example.

Do you have a simple share established on the Windows machine? The windows "home group" sharing works only with other Windows devices.

Here's a thread on the Samba forums that might help.

It means your PDC is not properly configured. Kerberos or LDAP is not required if you are using Samba 3 as Primar Domain Controller

Would you mind showing us your smb.conf?

By the error message (and problem you describe) I'm guessing you have:

security = user

But you didn't setup a user on the system with smbpasswd (if using the tdbsam backend that is, you can also use ldapsam for the LDAP version but that's slightly different).

Did you apply the registry patch required for samba?
