What is the meaning of ".d" in linux directory names?

Hello everyone,

On many linux distributions there are loadable (per system) options that are placed inside a .d folders, for example /etc/init.d/SomeScript

I'm wondering about the origin and meaning of this naming scheme.

Anyone here has an answer?

Thank you,
Maxim.

This is just a guess (not wild guess). If you look at the .d directories, then there are processes with the same name. Like ini.d has init. I think it means the proccesses "directory" or could it be daemon
