Welcome to LQ.
Please tell which OS, you are using. Debian Sarge ?
Or an old Ubuntu version ?
And show the output of the command
( cat /etc/debian_version )
cat /etc/issue

Sorry, just wondered, why you were asked for
some (very) old versions of perl ( 5.8.7...)
This is a clean install of Debian 5 :
Code:
debian:/home/knudfl# apt-get install libnet-ssleay-perl libnet-ssleay-perl libauthen-pam-perl libauthen-pam-perl libio-pty-perl libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl libmd5-perl
Reading in package lists .. Finished
Building dependency tree
Reading .... ... Finished
New packages to be installed :
libauthen-pam-perl libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl libnet-ssleay-perl
0 upgrade, 4 new install, 0 to remove and 71 not been upgraded.
0B/285kB to be fetched from archives.
After this operation, 1253kB of additional disk space will be used.
.. continue .. [Y/n]?
.. And I was asked for the install DVD, and got all 4 from the DVD.
( Debian 5.0 final april 2009.)
.....
Your /etc/apt/sources.list should look something like
Code:
deb http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian/ lenny main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian/ lenny main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main contrib
deb http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian/ lenny-proposed-updates non-free contrib main
deb-src http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian/ lenny-proposed-updates non-free contrib main
deb-src http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main contrib

I guess, the 'etch' lines are causing your troubles.
.. And I can't see any 'etch' options in "Synaptic" > >
Properties > Archives > "Software Sources" , don't know
where you got it from.
Suggest : hide away your file in a backup directory or
uncomment all lines with a hashmark ( # ) like :
# deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
... and just use my lines instead for a start.
The preferred "Download from" can be changed in > >
"Software Sources" , if you wish.
.....

You have etch sources and a lenny install, and one line pointing at lenny (the 'stable' one). Change all mentions of etch to lenny, apt-get update, try again.
