Web/Mail server domain name

Every tutorial I've seen tells you to name your web server example.com and your mail server mail.example.com. Is there any technological reason for not using the same domain name for both servers since they operate on differnt ports and protocols? Can't I name my mail server example.com just as my web server?

Welcome to LQ!
AFAIK:
Your MX host needs an A Record.
Code:
dig domain.com MX +short
The MX Record points to an IP.
Code:
host <ip>
should point to mail.domain.com
The A Record for domain.com and mail.domain.com can be the same IP.
That IP must have an rDNS assigned to it. (mail.domain.com), but you can only have one rDNS (reverse DNS) for one IP.
The host assigned that IP, or IPs can have any hostname you choose.

Someone else here will point out my inconsistencies, to be sure. So don't run off and "make it so" with further additional input.

I don't really understand this techstuff, records and DNS. I installed a virtual machine and set up a mail server and web server and gave them both the same domain and so far it seems to work. Maybe it'll come back to bite me in the arse later.

The summary I gave is hardly "techstuff" but ok.

I've been at IT for 21 years and I still stumble over DNS sometimes.

DNS 'basics'
and An intro. To DNS Records may help.

The basics of DNS and how things 'work' hasn't changed all that much since you were born.
Think of DNS as telephone book.

I still don't know whether it's a bad thing or not.

There is no good or bad about it - the naming examples are mostly just a convention that makes things more obvious - most of the time.

DNS is just a lookup process which maps a human readable name to a computer usable address.

A name is just a name - you can use just about any name you want so long as the DNS lookup for that name returns the correct IP address and it does not conflict in some way with another name or address.

It is a simple one-to-one mapping - like names and phone numbers in a phone book, as Habitual pointed out.

Good to know, just didn't want there to be a conflict.
