vsftpd not working: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused

vsftpd not working on my CentOS system. I tried logging in using FileZilla but the error message was: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".

What might be causing this?

Where are you connecting from ?
If it's a windows machine, check your firewall, and if you have another firewall other than the windows one, check they aren't both running.

I have disabled my windows firewall, still same message.

This doesn't help things.

Where are you connecting from ?

The same network ?

From the internet to a local network ?

Is there a firewall on the server ?

Is the ftp server running ?

Did you use a valid system user id and password ?

Does it work from any other ftp client ?

I'm sure there are a few dozen other questions that I can't think of right now.

Where are you connecting from ? A Windows 7 PC

The same network ? Yes, same subnet also.

From the internet to a local network ? No, local to local

Is there a firewall on the server ? maybe, iptables, not sure how to config.

Is the ftp server running ? Yes, vsftpd is running

Did you use a valid system user id and password ? Yes.

Does it work from any other ftp client ? No.

If you have gnome desktop, then you can modify the firewall from System Settings > Security level

If the Security level is "Enable firewall" then you need to check ftp and click ok.

I configured out the problem. I have reinstalled vsftpd, installed the webmin module and started the ftp server from webmin. Works perfectly now... My only problem right not is I don't know how to start vsftpd from ssh. I tried "service start vsftpd" but it doesn't work and it didn't give any error message too...

service vsftpd start
