vsftpd: keep client timestamp on uploaded file

Hi,

I'm running vsftpd (default config) on a RH server (5.1). I'd need vsftpd to leave the timestamp on files it receives from clients. Right now the behaviour is that the uploaded files get the timestamp from the server's localtime, whereas when I download the file with a client, I can tell the client (FileZilla) to keep the timestamp from server and this does work. What bothers me is that I'd like maintain the timestamp from clientside - i.e. not to be overwritten by server.

How it's working right now:
File A with Time 10:50 Jan 6th 2007 -> Server gives File A a new TimeStamp (e.g. 02:20 Jan 8th 2008)-> Client downloads file A with Timestamp 02:20 Jan 8th 2008

How it should work:
File A with Time 10:50 Jan 6th 2007 -> Server does not give File A a new TimeStamp (it remains 10:50 Jan 6th 2007)-> Client downloads file with Timestamp 10:50 Jan 6th 2007

Can I accomplish this by setting
mdtm_write=YES in /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf ?

Thanks!

Yes, that should do it.

It doesn't work.

I went further into it; I am using vsftpd 2.0.5.
When I ask FileZilla to preserve date and time of original file, it tells me that this works only with FTP server that have MFMT enabled (hence not MDMT as I was thinking). What's more, I found this bug report, which was rejected http://trac.filezilla-project.org/ticket/3869, where it's clearly stated that MFMT and not MDMT must be used for timestamp issue.

So now I'm out looking if 2.0.5 supports MFMT and how this is enabled.

Thanks for caring!

Hi.

I don't think it's supported. A 'grep -r -i mfmt' on the vsftpd source returns nothing.

Thanks Dave,

I "solved" by using a different FTP client (commercial smartFTP, because that's what was behind the FileZilla bug report), since I was interested only in "once for now" massive upload of data with timestamp preservation.

Unfortunately, there is no ML about vsftpd, so I mailed the author, but I don't expect to get feedback.

In the meantime, this workaround will do the job. To summarize: I activated MDMT on vsftpd and did upload the files with smartFTP. That works (but it's not the correct way).

Thanks for caring!
