vsftpd Error - 500 OOPS: child died

Im using...
CentOS 5
vsftpd.i386 2.0.5-10.el5

anonymous_enable=YES
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES
local_umask=022
dirmessage_enable=YES
xferlog_enable=YES
connect_from_port_20=YES
nopriv_user=nobody
listen=YES
pam_service_name=vsftpd
userlist_enable=YES
tcp_wrappers=YES
anon_root=/backups/

The log file report this...
[root@localhost ~]# more /etc/logrotate.d/vsftpd.log
/var/log/vsftpd.log {
# ftpd doesn't handle SIGHUP properly
nocompress
missingok
}

Every time i connect i get the following error...

"500 OOPS: child died"

Can anyone suggest what i am doing wrong? This worked fine on a past server.

Many thanks,
tim
