VirtualBox Guest OS RHEL 5.5 Not Booting from DVD for Installation

Hi!

With VirtualBox 4.1.6, I created a VM and tried installing RHEL 5.5 from the Original DVD.

In the Settings section of the VM, under Storage - > IDE Controller I specified the DVD Disk Drive (E wherein the medium is inserted.

I have checked IDE Primary/Secondary Master/Slave options/attributes one by one but all the times I am getting:

"FATAL: No bootable medium is found! System is halted!" error.

I also tried the Boot Options by hitting F12, when the VM is started, to select a Boot Device. This time the error reads something like this...

"FATAL: Could not read from the medium... System is halted!"

The DVD is fresh/not corrupted. As it works without complaints when installing the RHEL 5.5 as a stand alone OS (Host OS).

Please Note:

The Host OS is: Windows XP SP 3 (x86/32 Bit)
The RHEL 5.5. DVD is also a 32 Bit Version (in fact it is not specified/printed on it. So, it can be presumed that it is a 32 Bit Version.)

My Laptop's Details: Latitude | E6410 - i5 CPU 2.53 MHz - 4 GB RAM

Make an ISO image of the DVD under windows. Then specify the ISO as the image to boot from. True this doesn't cure the original ailment - which is probably some sort of locking conflict. But, it should get you going.
If you are still interested in a long term cure - then perhaps you could submit the (VirtualBox Machine) log file you get when you try to boot.

Initially, I did it. I have tried booting from both: the DVD and the ISO Image. Let me check the log after taking a cup of tea or coffee.

Thanks!

Dave, the log is quite lengthy. (I have emailed the complete log to you. Please do not waste your valuable time on it. If you are curious enough to figure out and fix the problem then we are on the same page!) I deleted the previous ones and this one is what I get when the system is in "halted" state.

Here is what I can understand:

Code:

HI Dev,

I think you must check the version of your virtual-box and go it to the lower version if it is not possible then tell me your which base machine your using ?

it must be of 32-bit or 64-bit

Thanks

Hi,

I just upgraded it from the previous stable release to VirtualBox-4.1.6-74713. Let me install the previous version I have with me (VirtualBox-4.1.0-73009-Win). I think your point is very relevant here.

There's One Point here: The Host OS (Windows XP SP 3) is 32 Bit. The DVD/Image is also 32 Bit. Is there any way to figure out as to whether the underlying Hardware supports a 32 or 64 Bit OS? Do we have restrictions if the Host OS is a 32 Bit one and we cannot install a 64 Bit Guest OS?

My Laptop's Details: Latitude | E6410 - i5 CPU 2.53 MHz - 4 GB RAM

Plase don't mind if I sound a noob here...just trying to help

can you please tell which type of hard disk you are using in virtual box?

ISCSI or IDE...?

Even I was having similar problem while installing RHEL 6 in vmware workstation where changing the type of hard disk from ISCSI to IDE did the trick for me

and if this doesn't works can you tell at which stage do you get this error message?
I mean are you not at all able to boot or after a specific stage you get this error?

Deep: The Medium Device Type is IDE

I create a VM, specify Boot Device/Medium, Start the VM and the system is "halted" screaming "No bootable medium found!"

Dave: I just installed the previous version i.e. VirtualBox 4.1.0 and the same problem has occured. Here is the log for your reference:

Dev:

ya, i think your problem is regarding only the processor if you have to install RHEL 5.5 in your virtual box then you must have at least i3 processor i could not work on i5 processor.

Deep also little bit right

near to the solution

Try out it

Thanks

then check the settings of virtual box i.e boot priority by pressing F12 to change the boot options at startup of virtual box

or go to system ---> check the boot order and set the priority to cdrom

make sure your iso image is bootable and working fine

or change the type to ISCSI

i5 Processor is certainly higher than i3.

Before posting the problem, I had done the obvious homework that includes playing with the IDE/SCSI/SATA Controllers, F12-to-Select-Boot-Device, Boot-Order, Primary/Secondary Master/Slave stuffs, etc.

I do not think that the DVD is OKAY enough to boot the system from:

Code:
Volume in drive F is RHEL_5.5 Source
 Volume Serial Number is B44E-D18A

 Directory of F:\

03/22/2010 06:40 PM 68 .discinfo
09/02/2008 11:00 PM 8,445 EULA
12/01/2006 04:23 AM 18,416 GPL
03/10/2010 06:16 AM 0 README-en
03/10/2010 06:16 AM 20,874 README-en.html
03/10/2010 06:16 AM 21,916 RELEASE-NOTES-en
03/10/2010 06:16 AM 43,052 RELEASE-NOTES-en.html
03/10/2010 07:51 PM 1,706 RPM-GPG-KEY-redhat-beta
03/10/2010 07:51 PM 1,164 RPM-GPG-KEY-redhat-release
03/22/2010 06:40 PM <DIR> SRPMS
03/22/2010 06:44 PM 2,250 TRANS.TBL
              10 File(s) 117,891 bytes
               1 Dir(s) 0 bytes free

There is no IMAGE/Boot file in there. The only directory SPRMS, which is in there, contains only Packages and Repository stuffs.

Could somebody verify as to what RHEL 5.5's contents look like? Let me Google it in the meanwhile.

The VM's Log does not speak anything about as to why it fails while booting from the CD/DVD ROM or ISO Image.
