Using Windos/XP to access Linux Server

Hi there,

I will be getting in the Linux world for my next assignment. Here is the project summary:

Setup Jitterbit on a Linux server and define a Jitterbit data exchange between two Linux servers.

To accomplish this task, I have to work remotely from a windows/XP workstation.

In order to work on the server's GUI environment, what do I need?

I have PuTTY installed on my windows station. Do I need to get and install Linux. Of so, why?

Thanks,

Bernard

to access the GUI you need a X11 client for windows

then to forward X11 over ssh

from winXP u can install X-Win32 or HummingBird Exceed or even Cygwin in order to get proper X11 sessions (GUI)..
otherwise if only command line is needed putty is more than enough and great!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the advice. I have printed the guide mentioned by tagno25 and I am currently reading it. It is very informative for someone like me that is coming from a MS Windows environment where everything is bundled together and you do not have much choice.

Regarding VNC, I think there would be some security issues over a WAN because I have to go through SSH. I do not think VNC is supported by PuTTY.

Nass, where is the best place to find documentation for the products you listed? Are they free or do they need commercial licensing?

Thanks to all of you,

Bernard
