using rsync for incremental backups


Hi

Can I use rsync for incremental backups of the running linux server?

Yes, that is probably the best way.

Yes, you can do incremental backups. You can either do this directly (with newer versions of rsync) using the --backup and --backup-dir flags, or in combination with a link copy of the directory tree.

However, be aware that rsync does a file level backup, so it does not do a good job of making snapshots of multi-file structures such as databases (if they are in use at the time).

Thx, but which rsync version support --backup and --backup-dir flags?

You might want to take a look at rsnapshot. It utilizes rsync to make incremental backups based on hard links, automated by cron.
