usb mounted on ltsp client does not show on desktop

Hi,

I'm using an ltsp server based on xubuntu 8.04 lts.

I followed a howto on troubleshooting local devices:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebugLocalDev

Everything is ok except on the last point I get an error:

Wrote 7bd41d281e3055fcbe4d7ad00c506372 size 32, waiting
Error: /media/gast04 is not mounted

gast04 is the account logged on to the client.

So as far as hardware is concerned, the usb is perfectly recognized by the udev. But then it fails to show on the desktop and manual mounting does not work.

The directory on the server where it should be mounted on the server also has very strange permissions:

ls -alh gast04
ls: kan geen toegang krijgen tot gast04/STORE_N_GO: Toegang geweigerd
ls: kan geen toegang krijgen tot gast04/tmp: Toegang geweigerd
totaal 8,0K
drwxr-x--- 4 root gast04 4,0K 2008-12-17 11:13 .
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4,0K 2008-12-17 11:29 ..
d????????? ? ? ? ? ? STORE_N_GO
d????????? ? ? ? ? ? tmp

Did anybody encounter similar issues either in or out of the ltsp context that can help me figure out what is going on here?

thanks.

You might need to format the disk, or try to see if on windows it works and what type of fs it has (FAT, FAT32, etc) and try to mount it with fs type options.

Thanks for the suggestion but the disk is fine, it can be mounted both automatically and manually on linux and windows system. It has been partitioned with fat32 (vfat)

It just doesn't show on the desktop of the thinclient and the manual mount action via ssh (see above) gives an error and then the permissions in the media/mountpoint are all screwed and strange.

What program is responsible for the automatic showup on the desktop? Is it hal or maybe something like gnomevfs? How can I troubleshoot such a thing?

thanks.
