How to upgrade RHEL5 U4 kernel 2.6.18 to 2.6.20?

I know can using "up2date" to upgrade kernel, but my Redhat still not ready license to enable Redhat RHN, where can download Kernel 2.6.20?

Unless you PAY FOR RedHat, you won't be able to update it. If you have paid, then contact RedHat support, and get them to fix their problem. If you haven't...then you can't. You can try to download the kernel from http://www.kernel.org, but installing/configuring it will be totally up to you, and if you then pay for support from RedHat, your installation will NOT be covered, since you installed sources/software that RedHat didn't provide.

Even if/when you pay and register with the RHN, you aren't going to have an easy, supported path to that kernel version. As of this writing, RHEL5's latest kernel package is 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5.

RHEL5 uses yum(8).

Thanks all

I use "yum update kernel" upgrade kernel to 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5.

But I cannot find 2.6.20 kernel from RedHat, how can find 2.6.20 kernel?

I cannot download any source from http://www.kernel.org in this moment, this Website still maintenance.

Where to download 2.6.20?

I download 2.6.20-XXX.FC6.i686 then perform kernel upgrade, everyting ok in this moment, any risk?

Right...because as anomie pointed out, the latest from RedHat is 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5. Don't know where you downloaded what you got, but it's NOT for RHEL. Installing it would probably not be a good thing, but do it at your own risk.

You still don't say why you need THAT version of the kernel, or what you're trying to accomplish, but you have two choices: pay for RedHat support, and upgrade using the RedHat network. If you've paid, then call RedHat support, and tell them what you're trying to do, and they may be able to give you options/help you get it done, and still stay within your warranty/supported configuration.

The second option is to use CentOS or another OS you don't have to pay for, and install the kernel from source, and take your chances.

Hi TBOne

Thanks for your reply.

2.6.20 kernel request by Customer software vendor.

"kernel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5.i686" is from 2007 : Not an upgrade.

The genuine 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5 for RHEL5 is from about August 2011,
and includes goodies from kernel-2.6.2x.x , 2.6.3x.x :
New modules for wireless, security updates from all 4 years, etc. etc.

Ok...then you definitely need to call RedHat, and get them involved, as we've said several times.

If you're paying for support, these are precisely the kinds of things they need to help you with, especially with third-party software.
