Understanding Dovecot Dependancies

When I install Dovecot on my CentOS 5.3 server, I notice that one of the dependencies is MySQL.

Code:
Installing:
 dovecot x86_64 1.0.7-7.el5 base 1.7 M
Installing for dependencies:
 mysql x86_64 5.0.45-7.el5 base 4.2 M
My question is if the MySQL installed above is the equivalent to a MySQL server? When I install the following above and then try to run the command to connect to the database, I get the following error:

Code:
[root@www ~]# rpm -qa mysql
mysql-5.0.45-7.el5

[root@www ~]# mysql -u root
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

No. The package mysql is just the client software and libraries. You can see this by looking at the mysql package info:
Code:
rpm -qi mysql
or
Code:
yum info mysql
