Unable to install CentOS on netbook using USB

Hello everyone,

I am trying to install CentOS on my netbook and I am referring the following documentation: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey

However, after completing the steps mentioned in the documentation when I plug in the USB to boot in CentOS it says: Unable to find the kernel load image and then sits at the boot: prompt.

Please advice.

Have you tried the alternatives mentioned? Sounds like the boot loader is unable to locate the kernel. With so many steps and a warning in the directions, I'd try the alternative methods. Especially one from a CentoOS member.

I have used Unetbootin in both Windows and Linux. Works everytime. I also like Multi-boot. Found on Pendrive Linux site. Works great. Good Luck.

Post This worked with centOS 5

The below got me to an install terminal. I did not have room to copy the whole iso over to the device on a second ext partition. However, it did boot up and want to start the install. I did not do anything with a kickstart script. Actually, I did not edit the sysliux.cfg at all and it still worked. However, I may be off the mark. You may have gotten this far before it failed.

Code:
fdisk /dev/YOUR_USB
 command p (<PRINT THE TABLE)
 command n (<CREATE A NEW PRIMARY PARTITION)
 command t (<TYPE b FOR FAT)
 command a (<SET BOOTABLE FLAG)
 command w (<WRITE THE TABLE)
 command q

Code:
syslinux -s /dev/YOUR_USB
find / -name "mbr.bin" -exec dd if={} of=/dev/YOUR_USB /;
cd /media/YOUR_USB
cp -rv /your/mounted/iso/isolinux syslinux
mv syslinux/isolinux.cfg syslinux/syslinux.cfg

unless running cent on a "netbook" was a MUST ,a 100% Must Use
i would not put it on a netbook .

LiveUSB Creator
fallow the fedora
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/...USB_Media.html
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/...ing-media.html
but use CentOS 5.6
or a better choice might be SL6

@ Reply

Thank you guys. Finally I was able to install CentOS on my Netbook :-) and it is working pretty smooth as of now.

@ mrmnemo

I tried the steps you mentioned but then the error changed to "Operating system load error" I might be doing something wrong. Thank you!!

@ jraz

Unetbootin worked like a charm!!! I ran Unetbootin using the CentOS iso image and then it was unable to find the load image so I deleted the CentOS folder (which contains rpms) it created on USB stick and copied the CentOS ISO image and then the install went pretty smooth. Thank you

@ JohnVV

I wanted to install CentOS on my netbook so that I can carry it wherever I go :-) . I would have installed it on my laptop but unfortunately it is pretty old and I don't think so it will be able to take the load ;-) Thank you
