Ubuntu Server unavailable over network after inactivity

I'm running a Ubuntu Server which loses network connectivity due to inactivity. Unable to ping the machine and pressing any key wakes up the connection.

All power management has been disabled on in the BIOS. Looking at the kern and dmesg logs, i did not see anything that stands out. what could be the cause?

Hi moosport,
I've never happened before, so... that smell like a hw problem:
Have you checked it out the NIC? Can you use other one? switch port? cable?

i have not switch my realtek PCI card yet. do you think its inherent in the hardware where i cannot control it in the driver setting? Different port/router/switch do not make a different.

I don't understand you very well :s
It's too weird.. so, in my opinion, you have to test your hw first. I'm talking about change pci card, switch port and cable (for example) to ensure yourself that it's a sw problem.

The only thing I have not tried is using a different PCI card. Moving the server between my switch and router does not resolve the issue.

finally fixed the problem after i edit the grub.cfg to disable acpi upon boot up. I had disabled all power management in the BIOS. Looks like the OS control the network card directly.

acpi=off
