Ubuntu Server 8.04

Hey all,

I need to run and maintain a server at my house for data storage and extended downloads, etc.

I have Ubuntu server 8.04 running on the machine, and I have automatic login enabled via gdm of a default user.

The server used to run smoothly until some time back, but of late, working on it has become really difficult as the display of the server keeps crashing from time to time. Sometimes it happens within seconds as well. The windows also flicker when I open another window, or browse through a folder. Running applications sometimes just disappear, like ktorrent or transmission. However, there has been no data loss.

The desktop running on this server is gnome. Going through the logs showed this:

Can anyone tell me how to remedy this? Reinstallation is not an answer since there's just too much data on the server.

I've updated the server regularly.

Please help.

Quite frankly, you're situation could come from one of several problems:

1) corrupted video driver (not likely, but let's hope)

2) failing video card/chips

3) bad RAM

4) failing CPU/m-board components

5) overheating

I'd try reinstalling the video driver first. If that doesn't work, open the case. Hopefully, you'll find a lot of dust bunnies in there, and nothing has suffered permanent damage...

I guess there's no answer to this. I opened the case and the components were clean - the server runs in an airconditioned environment, but I cleaned it nonetheless. Also, googling showed that this is a bug.

One such update updated the kernel and the problem started from that. Is there any way I can revert back to the old kernel as the default choice during boot? Can it be done in Grub? I tried accessing the Grub menu during boot but that had only the current kernel set as the default option and the recovery option.
