Ubuntu file server, I should use Static IP, how do I chose it?
 
Hi, I'm working on setting up a home file server using ubuntu 9.10 server.
I'm wondering if I should set up static Ip, and if I should how?

Okay so I want this server to be accessible through my buildings network (dorm college student). I have a 5 port network switch that I have my pc and the soon to be server connected to. So how do I configure this to make this possible?

Step one is to acquire a static address/netmask and the default router information. Also get dns resolution information: default servers and domain.

This might be difficult or it might be easy; it all depends on what your network administrators will support. Static addresses are more difficult to support than DHCP. Once you've got the address issued and information gathered, the rest is pretty simple:
