Ubuntu 9.10 - setting up rsync

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up rsync on a clean install of ubuntu server 9.10, with ubuntu-desktop installed.
Problem is, I have no idea where to start.

In the end, I'd liek the 2 windows clients (running Vista and Win7) to syncronise with the server when they log on/off. I'd also like them to access a printer attached to the server.

Help much appreciated.

rsync shouldn't need any 'setting up' out-of-the box in Ubuntu. Sounds more like you need help figuring out how to use it! I would suggest:

"man rsync" or google, as there are plenty of articles covering how to use.

to get you started: rsync -avz /files/to/be/synced/* /where/to/sync/them/to/

This will sync all the files in "/files/to/be/synced/" in "/where/to/sync/them/to/"

To do this to a remote server you can always add "username@ip_or_host:" (Note the ':') Now go out and learn all the options (-avz) that you need to customize your needs.

Me again!

I've got rsync working - thanks for the help!

However, looking into it in a bit more detail, I'm not sure that rsync is the best solution for me.
What I want is a user to log on at PC1 and edit files. WHen they log off, those files are copied to the server.
The user then log onto PC2, and the files are copied off the server to the same directory on PC2.

Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?

Sounds like you want Samba, so the client always logs onto the correct Samba share, no matter where they log on.
