Ubuntu 10.04 console displays off bottom of monitor

i just freshly installed ubuntu server on an acer aspire 1700 Desknote, after the install, the text prompting me to login appears about 1/4 of the way down the screen, after i login the input prompt is not visable, if i hit enter a few times an old one becomes visable.

it seems that the resolution is too big for the screen

I am guessing there is no X or GUI running? Can you adjust the positioning on the monitor itself? I suppose you could reconfigure console settings to correct the output, but I usually just login with SSH once the machine has an IP so never wasted much time playing with getting this fixed.
