Turning old computer into basic web server.

I was going to try and turn my old computer into a web server. It's a Celeron 477mhz, 90mb RAM, 9gb HD piece of junk. I've looked around for some how tos, but they aren't too helpful...

I was just wondering what Linux distro you would need, and whether anyone has any links to a step by step article or something. I'm an extreme noob at Linux, having only slightly messed around with Linux and gotten it running and doing basic stuff (DSL), so please speak in easy to understand terminology.

Thanks!

There are several links that have something in Google that look like what you are after. Here's one I bumped into which may be helpful:

I've been doing something similar with an old Celeron 500 (Intel CA810, 256MB RAM, 80GB HD) running Debian Testing (Etch), but nothing really heavy although I believe it could do more with not a lot of difficulty.

Please note. You do not need to run Apache on it. There is plenty of lightweight http servers to choose from. I'd recommend Debian base install without GUI for OS.

Thanks a ton for that link. You say I do not need to run Apache, is there anything bad about it? (ie: user unfriendly, etc.) If so, what other lightweight http servers do you recommend. I searched and it all looks like a foreign language to me.

If it is just for practice and testing purposes, you could try xampp, and easy to install apache distribution. http://www.apachefrieds.org

Well, if you want a good (and secure, if well configured) webserver, you should take apache. But it is not difficult to install I think. If you will run debian on your server, you can install it within your debian installation. And it works.
