Testing email with DNS change.

FYI: Fedora 9~ platform. Relatively unfamiliar with server config,
familiar with command line. Programmer.

I wish to move a domain to a new server. This is a shared server,
I.E. it is hosting multiple domains
I would like to be able to test email address configuration
prior to changing the DNS settings.
Example:
IP address = 255.255.255.255
domain = mydomain.com
email user = tim

Instructions are welcome. URLs to docs on the subject are equally welcome.
thanks
tim

you can use mutt utility to test your mail server from command line. see "man mutt" for more details.

It's not quite clear what you mean .. have you configured the MTA on the new server and want to confirm that it works before you cut over ?

Sorry not to be sufficiently clear.

Correct. I want to confirm the proper configuration before I 'cut over'.
Otherwise I might lose or delay important email.
thank you

You'll need to connect to it directly to test, try typing in the following:

Code:
telnet <ip_of_new_server> 25
helo <my_ip_address>
mail from: <my_email_address>
rcpt to: <recipient_email_address_to_test>
data
Subject: test email
<CR>
Just a test email ...
.
quit
cheers
