System load average increases with time

Hi all,
I have a Linux server dedicated to CVS. We are 3 users using it regularly.
During the last 2 weeks, the system load (as reported by top and uptime) is constantly increasing.
The numbers below were taken while there was no activity from the users on the server.

As of today:
user@CVSGenisys:~$ top
top - 09:45:14 up 158 days, 14:56, 1 user, load average: 16.00, 15.99, 15.91
Tasks: 80 total, 1 running, 79 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0% user, 0.7% system, 0.0% nice, 99.3% idle

As of last week:
user@CVSGenisys:~$ uptime
04:10:01 up 150 days, 9:21, 0 users, load average: 5.00, 5.00, 5.00

I have 2 questions about this:
- What does 'system load' means? I thought it was related to CPU usage but it seems not to be according to 'top'
- Any idea what is responsible for the system load increase?

Do not hesitate to ask if further details are needed.

Thanks,
Martin
