startx problem

hi to all
please help ,
i m using redhat4 enterprise server and when i typed startx from tty3
then my server goes shutdown.please tell me what problem can be and how to solve it

Your server shuts down or the screen just goes blank?

If X is not configured correctly and startx gets you a black screen
ctrl alt backspace
will kill the x server and put you back to cli. Post the error message.

Then configure your xorg.conf

If startx is actually causing a shutdown then post your xinit file
What windows mgr or desktop environment are you using?

Also if you are using redhat4 enterprise why not ask redhat for help?

and to add
is xorg and gnome or xfce even installed on that rhel 4 server ?
it might not be
