Your server shuts down or the screen just goes blank?
If X is not configured correctly and startx gets you a black screen
ctrl alt backspace
will kill the x server and put you back to cli. Post the error message.
Then configure your xorg.conf
If startx is actually causing a shutdown then post your xinit file
What windows mgr or desktop environment are you using?
Also if you are using redhat4 enterprise why not ask redhat for help?
