postmap /etc/postfix/virtual
postmap /etc/postfix/vmailbox

if that's a literal post of vmailbox, make sure you comment out the line starting ...

Yea those where the literal posts.

I fixed up some errors after I postmapped them. Will that be a problem?

And each time you make a change to the virtual and vmailbox, will you have to postmap them again?

I'm going to post my stuff again just so you can verify that there are no other errors.

myhostname = debian01.vc.shawcable.net
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases
alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases
myorigin = /etc/mailname
mydestination = S0106001839d6ad0b.vc.shawcable.net, debian01.vc.shawcable.net, localhost.vc.shawcable.net, localhost
relayhost =
mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8
mailbox_command = procmail -a "$EXTENSION"
mailbox_size_limit = 0
recipient_delimiter = +
inet_interfaces = all
virtual_mailbox_domains = example1.serveftp.com
virtual_mailbox_base = /var/mail/vhosts
virtual_mailbox_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/vmailbox
virtual_minimum_uid = 100
virtual_uid_maps = static:1001
virtual_gid_maps = static:1001
virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual

Vmailbox

# Comment out the entry below to implement a catch-all.
# @example.com example.com/catchall
# ...virtual mailboxes for more domains...

Virtual

postmaster@example1.serveftp.com postmaster

Now what's next after this?

Yes, you need to postmap again

I think main.cf looks OK. Restart postfix, and send yourself an email. There should be a file of some sort in /var/mail/..../test that includes the mail you sent if it works. If not, look at your maillog and post the relevant parts here

Ok i've postmapped again.

Reloaded postfix. Sent myself an email from my hotmail email.

To my test@example1.serveftp.com email.

I never got a email back from hotmail saying the domain doesn't exist etc.. etc..

I just haven't seem to have gotten an email yet.

Where would this mail log be?

mine is /var/log/maillog in FC5

try

locate maillog

if it isn't there.

Is there anything in /var/mail/vhosts/example1.serveftp.com/test ?

I think I found it.

It's in /var/log

There's mail.err, mail.log, and mail.info

Which one should I post? There all really long.

just the relevant lines, not the whole thing. I'd guess mail.log, but don't know dor sure.

Use tail to get the last few lines, so tail -20 /var/log/mail.log or similar

Thanks for that tail thing. It worked nice. yo_muffinman@hotmail.com is my hotmail account. I tried to send an email to test@example1.serveftp.com

This is the key.

I just had a play with a test account, and although this doesn't quite tie in with the instructions on the postfix site, this works

modify vmailbox from

test@example1.serveftp.com example1.serveftp.com/test

to

test@example1.serveftp.com example1.serveftp.com/test/mbox

re postmap it

create the mailbox with

touch /var/mail/vhosts/example1.serveftp.com/test/mbox

then set ownership

chown 1001:1001 /var/mail/vhosts/example1.serveftp.com/test/mbox

reload postfix (postfix reload)

try again

then try

cat /var/mail/vhosts/example1.serveftp.com/test/mbox

to see if the mail arrived, if not check your log again

YOU GOT MAIL!!!!

WOOOHOOOO!!!

So basically now I just need to make it so that the test account can't really login as it's own user.

And I need to know how to configure this account in let's say outlook express.

Is postfix smtp and pop3? If so, when it's asking for my incoming and outgoing servers what do I put?

And could you compile all the instructions that you gave me a put them together in one post so I won't have to bug anybody again with all this stuff.

Thanks so much.

You are going to need some king of server for pop3, etc. Something like dovecot is good, and should allow you to set up virtual users.

Have a look at

http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_post...tual_hosting_2

and see how you go

First before I do this, I'm a little confused.

Why would I need a pop3 server?

What's the difference between imap, pop3, and smtp.

Postfix I think is smtp.

And pop3= incoming
smtp= outgoing

then how did I receive mail from my hotmail domain?

My brother has a website that is hosted locally.

He only has a pop3 server. And uses the isp's smtp server.

Should I go that route? Or is it extremely reccomended to have both.

Basically smtp is for mail between servers (so in your case consider it sending). POP3 is like your ISP offers - every now and then you download messages to your local mail system (outlook, evolution, etc.). IMAP is where you leave the messages on a central server and read them locally (again with outlook, evolution, etc.), but messages stay on the central server.

It's probably best to relay through your ISP. Use the relayhost statement in main.cf for this. You will effectively need both, something has to deliver the mail to the POP.

Something like dovecot (and others) simply sit between the mailbox (that mbox file) and your mail agent (evolution, etc.)

So where should I go from here? Dovecot configuration has 1000 lines. And all are commented. Do I uncomment the lines I want?

Do I uncomment the lines in that guide?

And how do I setup test@example1.serveftp.com in outlook etc..

Since I'll just use my isp's smtp server, I guess I really only need dovecot.

Is this right?

And how do I find out the name of my incoming mail server so I can enter it in outlook. And use my isp's smtp server.

Thanks

First, have a look at Email Accounts under the Tools menu in Outlook. Should be pretty obvious, but no point until you have dovecot up and running.

To configure dovecot, read the link from #26 above
