Stable minimum install distribution for HP servers - suggestions needed

Hi,

I am preparing to setup servers for a (potentially) heavy load web server setup. This is my first Linux installation for 15 years - so forgive me my ignorance... :-)

I have aquired 3 pcs HP ML110 G7 servers with Xeon processor and 6 GB ram each. Disks are on a raid 10 configuration. I assume drivers will be part of the question/solution...?

The setup I am looking at contains:
server 1: Squid-cache
server 2: Apache (php web app)
server 3: Casssandra (NoSQL db)

Additional servers will be added to support server 2+3 when the load increses.

Stability and performance is the key!
I want the servers to be as lean and mean as possible - fewer services to get broken and keep updated...

Now - the question is - which distribution should I choose? And why?

Thanks!

Thomas Augustinus

Indeed

CentOS is quite widely used server OS,
it's based on RedHat (but it's free), you can get "support" anywhere on internet and everything needed for servers to run unattended is available (if some distro dependend software is needed, then you must use that distro, ex. Debian ...).

Thank you for your feedback - I will take a closer look at CentOS.
