Squirrelmail - ERROR: Could not complete request.

I just installed squirrelmail along with the dovecot IMAP server as well. I am able to login, and I'm able to send mail out.

When I login in, I get the error below. I cannot access my inbox. In my IMAP config file, I set the user directory as :

ERROR: Could not complete request.
Query: SELECT "INBOX"
Reason Given: Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. [2006-12-21 01:35:27]

Here are the logs from /var/log/maillog

Dec 21 01:35:27 manhattan dovecot: IMAP(username): file_lock_dotlock() failed with mbox file /var/mail/username: Permission denied
Dec 21 01:35:27 manhattan dovecot: IMAP(username): Disconnected
Dec 21 01:35:27 manhattan dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<username>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured
Dec 21 01:35:27 manhattan dovecot: IMAP(username): open(/var/mail/.temp.manhattan.2067.a115c86e1e358eed) failed: Permission denied
Dec 21 01:35:27 manhattan dovecot: IMAP(username): file_lock_dotlock() failed with mbox file /var/mail/username: Permission denied
Dec 21 01:35:27 manhattan dovecot: IMAP(username): Disconnected: Logged out

Seems like a permission problem doesn't it? What permissions and whom should own the inbox mail directories?

Currently they are owned my "mail" and only have rw------- permissions.

Any suggestions? Need more info? Please let me know.

I've come to the conclusion my problems lie with this part of the dovecot imap configuration file.

I've tried differnt things and I can't seem to make the problem better. I can definatly make it worse on this where I can't send any email.

If it helps, my location for mail users are /var/mail/<username>

Hope this helps.

## Mailbox locations and namespaces
##

# Location for users' mailboxes. This is the same as the old default_mail_env
# setting. The default is empty, which means that Dovecot tries to find the
# mailboxes automatically. This won't work if the user doesn't have any mail
# yet, so you should explicitly tell Dovecot the full location.
#
# If you're using mbox, giving a path to the INBOX file (eg. /var/mail/%u)
# isn't enough. You'll also need to tell Dovecot where the other mailboxes are
# and where Dovecot can place its index files. This is called the "root mail
# directory", and it must be the first path given in the mail_location setting.
#
# There are a few special variables you can use, eg.:
#
# %u - username
# %n - user part in user@domain, same as %u if there's no domain
# %d - domain part in user@domain, empty if there's no domain
# %h - home directory
#
# See doc/variables.txt for full list. Some examples:
#
# mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir
# mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u
# mail_location = mbox:/var/mail/%1n/%n:INDEX=/var/indexes/%1n/%n

Assuming that you ran the dovecot setup, have a look at

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.lin....general/55124

and see if the mbox_locks works. Also note the permissions set

No problem, and thanks for the response.

btw, all I did was to search for "dovecot file_lock_dotlock" on google's linux search
