Hey everyone,

I've been given the green light at work to build, setup and maintain a samba file server. We have about 10 concurrent users and often use files that are roughly 150-300 megs.

My question is how do I go about figuring out what speed processor and how much ram will I need? I did check out the samba.org site and found some good data on ram requirements. Doesn't really take much. But the processor requirements... I don't really know how to measure whether or not the cpu will be bogged down by traffic.

I guess I'm mostly curious about how much cpu does a samba server take? I'm sure this is a little more complicated and may not be easily determined, but any input is happily accepted.

Is this machine also going to be a domain controller? I have about 20 concurrent users on samba server. Here are the specs:

Abit AN-M2 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600
4GB DDR2 RAM
4 300GB SATA drives RAID5 hotswap
4U rackmount case
700w power supply
2nd Gigibit NIC card
CentOS 5


never had any complaints

if this is mission critical put in redundant power supply

Yeah, it will be a PDC. Here's what I have planned.

AMD AM2 Opteron 2.0 Ghz
2 GB DDR2
2 150 GB SATA (RAID 1)
Debian 4.0 (etch)

You're using a Tyan Tomcat H1000S motherboard? If so did you manage to get a current distro working with it? I'm thinking of using this board but the driver support at Tyan ended with RHEL4 = CentOS4.
