single user mode linux booting


is any body help me to boot redhat linux Advance Server4.0
please help me with step by step procedure.
becuase i am getting problem in squid.conf so i have to rename the same and copy the newone , but in normal booting i am getting access denied problem , i think which can be done in single usermode
so please help

Using grub:

Restart you computer.
Wait for the grub menu
move the cursor in order to select the desired kernel(the default kernel is selected)
press e to edit the parameters
select the second, or the line which kernel /boot/vm~~......~ root=/dev/~~ ro
press e again to edit the line
at the end of the line write " Single"
press enter (to acept the entry)
press b to boot
wait for the computer to boot and give the root password.
