I have one computer with windows 7 (computername = windowspc) connected through a modem router to a computer running Ubuntu 10.10 (computername = linuxpc). Had Samba setup and working between them.

Decided to check out Fedora 14 (computername = linuxpc). so set up dual boot on the on the Ubuntu box and installed samba. When Fedora is running Win 7 only sees shares for Fedora. If Ubuntu is running win 7 cannot connect to any shares stating a bad file path. I understand that both linux os’es use the same ip address and that’s probably were Win7 must have problems.

Ran nbtstat –r in windows and was able to swap the situation around i.e. win7 sees Ubuntu but not Fedora.

I would like to be able to set it up so that when logged on to either of the linux os’es I would be able to see shares from both partitions in Win7. Or if that’s not possible, to differentiate them in some way so that Win7 would recognise which os was running and display the shares accordingly.

What I am asking for may be absolutely impossible but it never hurts to ask.

All advice appreciated. Found it a hard question to try to google.

When I setup my centos box to share files on my windows network I almost copy this configuration:

I have set up samba on both boxes no problem there. It is the networking of the Dual Boot box and ip address resolution in Win7 that has me stumped. That is to say both os'es on my dual boot linux box have the same ip address. So is there a way to get Win7 to differentiate between the two and load the shares that are related the whichever os I have booted into.

I got it. Why don´t you use different IP adresses and different names on both linux boxes?

I might not have made my setup clear. It is as follows:

Computer 1 - Win7 ip adress 192.168.1.2
Computer 2 - Dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 ip address 192.168.1.3

From my understanding as both linux os'es are on the same computer, using the same connection, the ip address for both would be the same. Changing the netbios name or computer name would not work as Win7 would only use these to resolve the ip address which in this case would be the same.(Could be wrong).

So essentially is there a way for Win7 to recognise which linux os was running on Computer 2 and display the shares accordingly.
