Severe performance issues when querying InnoDB databases >= 2m rows on MySQL 4.1.20

Hiya,

I'm a software developer working with MySQL 4.1.20 on a RHEL 4 server and we have several tables for error logs and the like containing upwards of several million rows. When we query those tables (anything except INSERT, basically), the MySQL server falls over.

Has anyone experienced this, or does anyone know how I might be able to fix it/have a link that will help?

Thanks,

Ben.

What do the mysql logs indicate? What type of server? Is there heavy disk I/O? More details on hardware and anything specific with your setup would be helpful.

The logs don't seem to indicate anything; it just stops responding.

The server is a Dell PowerEdge 6-something-or-other (it's in our datacentre, and I can't remember the exact number) with 4Gb RAM and two 2GHz Xeon processors.

The operating system itself is installed on a pair of 149GB discs configured to use RAID1. MySQL and the rest of the data sits on a 4x149GB RAID5 stripe.

I'm not sure how to check disc usage during the queries.
