i have a home server, called Neptune, home ip 192.168.0.200, i can SSH into it, it's running Ubuntu server 6.10.
I have a dlink 604g+ wireless/wired router, along with many dlink 1GB ethernet switches. Now the fact that most pc's are running on gigabit, which is working nicely, i would like to have a diskless (or only floppy) pc, which boots up and watches movies (it has a mx4400 which is enough to watch movies of live cd's, possibly upgrade later, if i can figure this out).
Now, i understand neptune is going to need to run a DHCP server, but i want to keep the DHCP server on the Dlink still running and serving the main IP's, kinda like internet will always work if accidentally fry Neptune. And i've heard i can setup (dhcpd?) or as linux dhcp server to only serve out ip's to specific MAC adresses. That's what i want to do.
I've tried sudo apt-get install dhcpd. which installs a package named dhcp. This doesn't run straight off and needs to be configured. I've tried numerous configs, all still don't allow the service to start.
so if someone could give me a config file example that should run, i'd be much obliged.
