Question Setting Up live FTP Server with Static IP in Red-Hat Linux 6

Hi Guys,

I want to some guidance from you in setting up the Live FTP server in Redhat Linux 6 with Static IP

120.50.150.50.

Now should I set my Static Public IP directly to my Linux machine?
If so what whould be my sunbet mask?
Is any type of natting required here? if so where would that be configured on command line or in Routers GUI?

Thanks.
Please replay to me if you require more information from my side.

Do you have a router or firewall? If so you'll need to NAT FTP to your Linux box on the internal LAN. Port 21 for FTP and depending on whether you use passive FTP you may require further port openings.

Thanks for reply!

Yes I have router.
But before that one question
I have puchased static public IP from MTNL , and it should be ping from any computer having internet right? But I am not able to ping from different machine to that, Why so?
I know the IP is static but why it is not getting ping from different system.

Pining your public IP depends on your router settings. I cannot ping my public IP for instance.

I would setup your server with FTP listening on port 21. NAT your public IP port 21 to your server on port 21. Externally you should be able to telnet on port 21 to your FTP server.

If that doesn't work telnet to your server locally on port 21.

If the public IP is not NAT'd to a machine with both firewalls aren't open to ICMP ping then you won't be able to ping it.

Like Zetec said, you'll need to NAT your router/firewall:
<public IP>:21 to <LAN IP>:21

If you want browsers to browse your ftp. (PASV FTP Throughput)
<public IP>:40000-40100 port range to <LAN IP>:40000-40100 port range

If you want your ftp to be pingable.
<public IP>:ICMP to <LAN IP>:ICMP

You'll need to then open all these ports up on the firewalls on router and linux box.

There's a good explanation of FTP issues, especially related to active vs pasv here http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html
