setting up DHCP

I am trying to setup dhcp in vmware workstation. I am running ubuntu x64. i installed isc-dhcp-server. i was getting an error about it not being configured to listen on any interfaces, so I set the interface to eth0. I have attached an image of the error that I am receiving. I have also attached an image of /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf. any ideas on how to fix this?

The subnet definition seems fine. Do you have any global commands in dhcpd.conf, or was that the entire file?

Does the DHCP server have an IP address on eth0 in the 192.168.1.0/24 network?

This is most likely the error. But the sentence above needs some explanation.

The host running the dhcp server must have eth0
eth0 must have an address in the range 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.253.
eth0 mist not have an address which is also in your DHCP address pool (I think, better be safe)

In order for external hosts to receive an address, the eth0 interface must be bridged, not NATted.

it does not have an address at all. and that is not all of the file. I am not sure how to copy the rest since it is a virtual machine, and I am unable to copy/paste the results. I am having trouble installing the tools.

That isn't very much information. At least you could elaborate on that if you want others to spend their time thinking about your problem.
For sure you should get networking up and running. I assume you know how to do that in Ubuntu.
The you can copy files using scp
When you install dhcpd, it comes with a example dhcp.conf file. If it is not in /etc, it is somewhere in /usr/share/doc. Use find to find it.

I have the network adapter set to host-only. What am I copying where with scp? I cannot get the two machines to connect. And I can't connect to the shared folder, without first installing the tools, I believe.
The file that I edited was /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf.
in that doc directory, i found isc-dhcp-client, common, and server. The server file is like the one in dhcp above.

I agree with jlinkels. You need to provide more information to us.
First of all, it is not the wise idea you rely on VM console to configure and troubleshoot problem.
In order to gain access SSH access

Make sure SSH service is running at your VM
Code:
ps -ef |grep sshd
netstat -anp |grep sshd
You should see port 22 is listening

Check your host-only interface IP address
Code:
ifconfig
SSH with ssh client (for windows use putty)

With your description, you configured router interface of dhcpd.conf is 192.168.1.254.
With that your interface ip address should 192.168.1.254

What is your virtualization software? Make sure that software host-only network should not run DHCP service. So that it won't interrupt with your server.

I am running vmware workstation. i have an ip address of 192.168.1.149. I made sure that the machine does not use the host-provided network.
