Setting up a registration website

Hello all, I'm looking for some advice on what tools to use for a project. I'm moderately proficient in Linux, but I haven't done sophisticated web development. I'd rather use existing packages than reinvent the wheel. If some of the fine folks out there would be so kind and to tell me how they would approach such a project, I'd be most appreciative.

I'm hoping to set up a website to allow users to register for an upcoming event. I have the attendees database from last year, and would like a system where returning attendees can enter a code and be presented with the registration form populated with their info from last year.

For testing purposes I have set up a machine with ubuntu FF, and have installed Apache2 and PHP.

Any opinions out there?

Well sounds like all you're missing is MySQL.

If you download and install that you have LAMP (linux Apache Mysql PHP).

You can find plenty of tutorials to setup a website using LAMP (just google).

Also search for php scripts for registration. I'm sure this wheel has been re-invented half a million times already.

Thanks and more info

Thanks for the tip. I've got MySQL installed and I'm hard at work on my next problem...which I may post if I can't a solution elsewhere.

For those in similar situations, I found a good head start at the PHP form generator website http://phpformgen.sourceforge.net/ This allows one to put together the user interface end quickly and easily.

You could probably just download phpBB2, and use the registration code from that. Be sure to give them credit though, it's a great bulletin board!
