Set date using ntp

I've used this command to set date of CentOS server:
Code:
     ntpdate -s 172.16.16.1
but the date on my server doesn't change after running the command!
I've put the line in /etc/ntp.conf
restrict 172.16.16.0 mask 255.255.0.0 nomodify notrap

What exactly is 172.16.16.1? What are the error messages if any?

Is that line in your time server's (172.16.16.1) ntp.conf or client? Should be in your time server's ntp.conf. It allows clients in that network to connect to the server. You also need to allow ntp traffic through the firewall if running.
