Server software advice
Hi,
I want to build a home server with Samba, ftp, etc etc. Which Distro would you guys recommend? Im debating between Ubuntu with Gui, OpenSuse or Fedora. your advice is greatly appreciated. |
CentOS is the right choice assuming you're using it as a genuine server and not expecting to hack video gimmickry and other non-server roles onto it as well. Ubuntu LTS would do well too if you're not familiar with RPM based distros
Don't use fedora, it's not designed for that. |
Hi,
In your CentOS is based. |
Since you have to ask, CentOS or Ubuntu LTS.
|
I still recommend CentOS or Ubuntu LTS.
|
Thank you guys!!! OK, I was using Ubuntu LTS server but with no GUI. Should I install the Desktop edition and just install all the server packages like vsftpd, Samba, etc etc?
Thanks again for your response. |
no, you shouldn't. if you need a gui, install it. Servers should not need gui's though.

Thanks Chris!
