Red face sendmail not writing logs

hai,
I had removed the maillog file from my server due to space insufficency. I have created a maillog file in /var/log/maillog using touch command with same attributes.
#ls -l /var/log/maillog
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Apr 1 20:22 /var/log/maillog

After that the mail server is working fine and mails are moving around. But the logs were not written. Why???

Please guide me

You might need to restart sendmail. If you delete a open a file, it might cause the daemon to stop writing to it.
