Sending Backup Notification????

I have wriiten a script which will take regular backup from Linux Server and deposit the dump through smb to the remote window 2000 server. There was a requirement that The status of the Backup to be sent to email ID but internally the Window Admins are not allowing to add this Linux server to the allowed list of machines allowed to sent/recieve mails in the intranet.Earlier I had configured mail server but it says "peer to mails server refused".Is there any alternative how can I really make things go without our Exchange server.

Let the e-mail be free!

The way to get SMTP mail into an Exchange server is with a Microsoft SMTP gateway, and it sounds like they have that locked down pretty tight. There is no good alternative. Besides there are lots of other good reasons for UNIX servers to send e-mail. I think you need to know that there are no simple or reasonable alternatives to give you more power to negotiate a proper solution.

If you cannot convince them to add all the UNIX servers to the allowable senders list, then get them to add one and turn it into a gateway for the rest.

As an example of a bad kludge: you could turn your UNIX machine into a POP server and have a workstation retrieve and forward the mail to exchange. But now you have to administer a POP server and you have a workstation that has to be up 24/7. And it does not scale well (once you start abusing it).

Better to get it done right. Mister Exchange Administrator, tear down that wall!

sounds like you need to bump this up to your mgr; it's his job to deal with politics, which is what this is.
Don't try to hack around it, it'll bite you sooner or later. just make sure you bump it in writing, cc yourself.
