Searching/indexing software on a unix/linux server and windows-xp clients

Hi,

I would like to find a software like beagle, but for server-client architecture.

We have a linux/unix server (unfortunately I don't know exactly) which we use as a data center thru samba from windows xp clients. We have a lot of files and directories, and sometimes it is not easy to find a specific file.

I thought that something like beagle where the deamon runs on the server, and the client on the "client pc" would do the trick.

Do you have any ideas?

You might be able to do something with the "swish-e" file indexer, although IIRC it uses a Web interface rather than being client-server. If document management is a serious issue then it probably better to look at a CMS or dedicated document management software to track your stuff, rather than a filesystem indexer. I think that the Alfresco CMS can expose document stores to Windows as mapped drives, although I can't remember the details.

I have a similar desire. I have looked at 'recoll' for the indexing, but I do not know how to serve this to Windows clients. Perhaps VNC?

I find that too complex for my needs. It has a couple of interesting functions, but most if its capabilities would be totally useless for us.

Isn't there any software which does nothing more than indexing, and making searches for (windows) clients without any fuss?
