First make sure that the sasl authentication daemon is running. For example in my case, I am using dovecot rather than Cyrus. If I run ps -aux | grep auth, I get the following: nobody 2334 0.0 0.1 72708 3256 ? S Jul16 0:00 dovecot-auth as well as another process.
If the process is running, try a netstat, grep'ing for the same term and see if it is listening on an sockets. It most likely will connect on a unix stream socket for interprocess communication.
You most likely have a configuration error. Knowing whether or not the processes are starting will give you a clue as to where the error may be and how sever it is. Look in your syslog, mail server log, and your cyrus log, and daemon log for any signs of trouble.
Welcome to LQ. Your post was held for moderation because of a few things. It was your very first post, also it was to a technical forum versus the introductions forum (no problem), and finally it was to a thread which is 7 years old.
Since the solution appears to be a viable one, and since the OP for this thread still shows activity on LQ during the current year, I've chosen to approve the post. Moving forwards, your posts will likely not be held for any moderation. However, please be aware of the age of threads and waking them up after many, many years of inactivity may not always be the right choice. This thread was not marked as Solved, and once again, your post may be helpful for someone even if the OP is not longer interested in this question.
It's because me too have stumbled upon forum posts where people had the same problem than I, and didn't report back the solution. In fact, this is not very uncommon and an XKCD comic has been made about it, which I believe is now well known : https://xkcd.com/979/
