Samba Windows XP Delayed Write FAiled

Hi Everyone,

This issue is driving me totally nuts. I have searched and implemented possible fixes I have found through forums such as this and anywhere I can find it on the internet.

I am asking this question as a last resort, I don't normally have to ask for any specific help with everything being able to be resolved from info on the net.

Enough dribble, the problem I am having is that lately every hour or so I am receivng "Delayed Write Failed" errors on Windows XP Clients connected to a CentOS 5 Samba Server. The Samba server is a PDC for my own domain creating an NT4 style domain. The program receiving these errors is Outlook Express. I have configured Outlook Express store folders to be on the users homedrive along with their My Documents, music, pictures, etc. This setup has worked fine previously but over the last twelve months this issue has been persistent.

I am using a Cisco switch and Cisco router. The router is acting as a DHCP server and routes traffic between two LANs. All Samba clients are on the same LAN as the server. Also I am using Sambas inbuilt Winbind. This works fine as you can ping any machine by its hostname.

For testing, the firewall has been disabled on the Samba server and also the XP Clients.

I have disabled Oplocks, Level II Oplocks, Kernel Oplocks.
I have disabled Oplocks on the client machines.
I have disabled Encryption on the clients.
I have instructed Samba to only use port 139.
I have increased the Disk Wait Time in Windows clients.
I have replaced the NIC.
I have increased the OS priority to 255.
I have pretty well done everything that is thought to rectify this problem that I have found on the net yet the issue remains.

I am receiving

Nov 9 16:55:52 morpheus smbd[4763]: call_nt_transact_ioctl(0x90064): Currently not implemented.

Nov 9 16:57:17 morpheus smbd[3091]: read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 172.16.3.41. Error = Connection reset by peer

Nov 9 16:59:49 morpheus smbd[3093]: [2011/11/09 16:59:49, 0] lib/util_sock.c:send_smb(767)
Nov 9 16:59:49 morpheus smbd[3093]: Error writing 75 bytes to client. -1. (Broken pipe)

and at about the same time whichever client is accessing files on the server at that time falls over with "Delayed Write Failed" and applications hang.

The IP address above is the client machine that I was using at the time and the machine that had an issue at that time.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Adam

All I can think of is that between the server and the client, there's something misbehaving. Maybe running ping and seeing if anothing gets dropped will give a hint.

Thanks for your response. I solved it.

I noticed today a port on the Cisco switch that was renegotiating every so often causing the issue.

Everything is working fine now

When I see `Delayed Write Failed` message, first thing comes to my mind, in physical units, hardware failture (hdd or cd/dvd disk etc.), in network file systems like smb, network connection problem.
