samba vs cloud

hellow everyone ;)

I have a question or I need advice. Forgive me for simple question :) It is a situation where management thinks that (server computers) is like TV you buy it turn it on and it just works! I started new job and there is network with 70 PCs. They need file server or storage place from their point of view. Managers say that they want to use google drive or dropbox as a server where they keep company data. I plan to install samba server. So can someone tell me what advanteges has coud then dedicated file server if we have VPN and users can connect from anywhere with their laptops or PCs.

Thanks.

Cloud advantages: No server required, no server maintenance required, no server configuration required, no network load if clients connect from outside.

In-house file server advantages: Control, possibly better security (which is related to control).

Heh ...

I certainly don't trust my company data to The Surely-Benevolent Brother Google.

The easiest way to win the argument is to point out how much internet bandwidth you'd have to consume to be able to use Google or Drop Box in the way they are suggesting (effectively like an internal file server) and would they rather eat a single, up front charge for the internal server or be eaten alive by their ISP every month?

MBAs are adorable however the single personality trait they universally display is soul crushing greed, as such you can get them to do just about anything you want if you tell them the alternative is more expensive.

Management needs to understand that the "Cloud" is not some mystical magickal place somewhere over the rainbow. "Cloud" is nothing more than a marketing term for "somebody else's server."

As an individual, I like to manage my own data. I have my own cloud right here; I don't need anyone else's. If I were a business, I'd take the same approach.

The only advantages to using somebody else's server is that you don't have to buy, configure, and manage the server. AFAIC, that does not outweigh the disadvantages in terms of security, control, and so on.

thank you friends I will use this arguments. It is so hard to let people understand something when they have zero knowledge is technologies! i think key point is that it will really effect on internet when someone will share 15 GB of data to another person and first this information must be uploaded and then downloaded to another person sitting in next room :D well this kind of argument will make sense for them just they will understand it.

friends I have discovered one more argument that file server is better solution than cloud. So we know google drive and drop box has trush or undelete function. If we think from human factor side, if the user will delete some file accidentally and then will empty trush! the file or files will be lost forever. In samba installation I can enable recycle bin hidden from users. it can be on seperate hdd where this kind of stuff weill be cept and + file servers backup. I will be able to retrive data that users think is lost. What you think about this?

A Samba server is nice, but you would need someting like a VPN for mobile/off site users. Maybe consider something like Owncloud instead.
It's a "cloud" thingie, but it's your cloud.

yes familiar with own cloud I will implement it and openvpn with easy-rsa 2048 and dh 2048 keys are running I think I need 4096 for both encryption. In company there is enother small research sub company and audit say thet they have to implement microsoft latest server os and ma exchange LATEST!!! versions which cost too much and servers also are expensive for them even if you are running core installations. So I think that iredmail is better solution I wont need extra server running active directory for exchane!!!! I am under attack of people without knowledge!!! I know how to run both AD and exchange but it is nightmare!!!

Yeah. That's why every Microsoft user runs a third-party anti-virus program.

Who is "they" anyway?

paul2015 06-26-2015 02:01 AM

"they" my friend are poeple who want to keep data in our company and it must be safe they have requirment. so I said linux operqting system is more secure than ms. they have their opinion. even core installation can not prevent mass of virusis written for ms systems. where linux has powerfull security plus selinux iptables an so on. they dont care ms is better :D I love cute errors of ms systems "unknown error occured" or "you have performed ilegal operation" "something went wrong" when you open some program :D

For your own cloud, read OpenStack -The Open Source Cloud Operating System/
