Samba Users

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I was wondering on how to migrate existing linux users in my box into my new samba install? Samba is also installed in the same box where my linux users are.

Please anyone kindly advise.

Cheers!

If you use security=users you have to add them manualy (smbpasswd -a username). I think...

Is there a way that I can map my existing linux users' id and their passwords in samba?

I'd like to use my existing linux user credentials if possible to avoid re-creating them again.

Thanks!

On second thought, if I do add them manually via smbpasswd -a username, will this keep their existing passwords they have set in the unix box or do I have to recreate these passwords also?

I use security=users parameter, perhaps I need to use a different parameter in here to enable samba to use and authenticate against its current unix user credentials in the box?

Please advise.

unix password sync = yes

You could also use the "unix password sync" option in your smb.conf.

The idea there is to keep the passwords the same, without having to change them twice. You will have to add users to samba first, but this way you won't have to muck with their password. I think. It's been awhile since I've used this option stand alone. At worst you'll have to add them to samba then change their password once.

Look it up in the smb.conf man page, it gives a decent description.

Good luck.

Ok did that. So how can I force sync their existing unix passwords to work with samba?

Do I just restart samba service?

Thanks!
