Hello friends,
I have been facing a weird problem of late. Our centos 5.5 server is acting as a router and we use it for sharing internet and sharing files using CIFS or SAMBA. There are 2 nic's one for LAN and one for internet connectivity. Now the problem is as soon as the internet connection stops working or the internet cable is unplugged the samba shares become unavailable from within the LAN. I can ssh and can access the FTP server as well. So it is samba specific glitch. Any idea why its not working? Please help

Does your smb.conf contain the "bind interfaces only" and "interfaces" options?

What happens to the smbd and nmbd processes when the link goes down? If they're still running, can you browse the shares from the server itself with smbclient?

Are the clients connecting to the Samba server by name? Is name resolution performed by DNS or WINS?

Anything in the logs?

Hi folks, problem solved!
Apparently the samba server was using an internet based DNS server as its preferred DNS server in the /etc/resolv.conf which i modified to a local DNS server. So the problem was name resolution stopped working since i had an unreachable DNS server once internet wasnt available. Everything's fine once again!
