Samba Share Working with Some Users and Not Others

Hi All

I have samba shared folders which are avalible for everyone to access but now when some users try and access the sahre from Windows XP they are being prompted for a username/password which when entered does not work. Some of my 2003 Servers can access the share and some cant

Here is a copy of my smb.conf.

#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
#
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentary and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
# "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
# errors.

# Windows Internet Name Serving Support Section:
# WINS Support - Tells the NMBD component of Samba to enable its WINS Server
; wins support = no

# WINS Server - Tells the NMBD components of Samba to be a WINS Client
# Note: Samba can be either a WINS Server, or a WINS Client, but NOT both
; wins server = w.x.y.z

# If we receive WINS server info from DHCP, override the options above.

# This will prevent nmbd to search for NetBIOS names through DNS.

#### Networking ####

#### Debugging/Accounting ####

# through syslog you should set the following parameter to something higher.

# Do something sensible when Samba crashes: mail the admin a backtrace

####### Authentication #######

# "security = user" is always a good idea. This will require a Unix account
# in this server for every user accessing the server. See
# /usr/share/doc/samba-doc/htmldocs/Samba3-HOWTO/ServerType.html
# in the samba-doc package for details.

# You may wish to use password encryption. See the section on
# 'encrypt passwords' in the smb.conf(5) manpage before enabling.

# If you are using encrypted passwords, Samba will need to know what
# password database type you are using.

# This boolean parameter controls whether Samba attempts to sync the Unix
# password with the SMB password when the encrypted SMB password in the
# passdb is changed.
; unix password sync = no

# For Unix password sync to work on a Debian GNU/Linux system, the following
# parameters must be set (thanks to Ian Kahan <<kahan@informatik.tu-muenchen.de> for
# sending the correct chat script for the passwd program in Debian Sarge).

# This boolean controls whether PAM will be used for password changes
# when requested by an SMB client instead of the program listed in
# 'passwd program'. The default is 'no'.

Its been awhile since I've worked with winbind. But is it not working per user account or per computer? And is winbind syncing with AD properly? I don't remember how to tell if it is or isn't...

The winbind config seems to be working fine but what i have just discovered is the log file

The problem you have is that samba can't be configured to be a domain member and a samba file server at the same time.
The only way it worked for me was to first join the samba machine to the domain and then create the shares.
If you create the shares first then samba acts as a PDC for your domain.(local master browser for workgroup DOMAIN). If you run testparm it should say that is a PDC for workgroup domain
And ofcourse after that it want join the domain.

So basically what is hapenning in your situation is that because samba now is PDC you have to create users and passwords with smbpasswd in the machine where you have your fileserver.
It doesn't check through active directory for usernames and passwords.
