samba share after boot requires nmbd command?

Hi all,

I'm running a fedora 14 file server with samba for a windows network. When I reboot my file server my samba share is no longer available. After a long search I found that if i run nmbd as root, the share is accessible again.
I guess I can run nmbd everytime I reboot but I think something is wrong with my setup and it's one of those things that if I just ignore it will come back and bite me from behind.

Any advice or info on this is appreciated.

nmbd provides Windows name service. It is very possible that your clients require this information to make a connection. I would include nmbd in your normal startup configuration.

I assumed nmbd is part of smbd and not a separate service for NetBIOS name resolving.

In the Service Configuratior GUI in Gnome nmb service comes with the following description:
Quote:
Starts and stops the Samba smbd and nmbd daemons used to provide SMB network services.
while the smb service has the description:
Quote:
Starts and stops the Samba smbd daemon used to provide SMB network services.
does that mean that I should replace smbd with nmbd in my startup configuration?

No. They run together, simultaneously.

Check the logs (/var/log/samba) for errors. Might be some clues as to why it does not start at boot up.

I have seen occasions where a service (service B) requires another service (service A) in order to start and if that service (service A) isn't running yet service B won't start, but manually starting it works fine. The work around I have used is to move service B later in the script list (e.g. move from S15 to S97) to cause it to wait a little longer before starting.
