Ok. Update time.

I commented the line in smb.conf for roaming profiles. I also added a new Gigabit NIC to the server and disabled its integrated NIC. The problem is not nearly as prolific as it was, but there is still the occasional complaint from the users. Now I hear one a day, maybe every other day, instead of 10-20/day. Big improvement, but not solved yet. Any other ideas?

Ok things are getting better The rate at which you are getting complaints isn't too bad. Some of it may be attributed to just having complained for so long but we don't want to rely on that.

If it is the same (more or less) users complaining find out if it a specific application that they are complaining about. If it is find how\where it is installed and where it is getting it's data from. What you are looking for here are any ties to the samba server, the old roaming profiles, proper WINS and DNS settings etc. Also check the NIC on their machines and make sure it is running 100Mbps and preferably full duplex. If it is set to auto change it to 100Mbps.

Start with that and see what you find.

UPDATE:
It looks like the problem is resolved. No complaints this week.

We're an engineering shop so we've got people working on AutoCAD drawings, Solidworks models, Metacomp CFD simulations as well as the normal office sweet of apps. All critical files are stored on the server. Every computer has a 10/100Mb/sec NIC set to 100Mb. Eventually (over the next couple months) I will be upgrading all of them to new 10/100/1000 NICs to go with all the gigabit networking kit I just installed all over the place.

For now, I'm calling it good. Thanks for all your help, John. Have a good one.
