samba printer problems

I am having an extremely tough time getting network printing to work with samba and my hp 1018 printer. The printer works fine locally, and also works fine using the 'echo str server' command. Before the printer just kept saying "Unable to connect" or something.

I changed the smb.conf to:
Code:
# Global parameters
[global]
        workgroup = APSGROUP
        server string = fs0
        password server = None
        username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
        log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
        max log size = 50
        socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
        dns proxy = No
        idmap uid = 16777216-33554431
        idmap gid = 16777216-33554431
        printcap name = /etc/printcap
        load printers = yes
        printing = bsd
        printer admin = variable

[homes]
        comment = Home Directories
        read only = No
        browseable = No

[printers]
        comment = All Printers
        path = /var/spool/samba
        guest ok = Yes
        printable = Yes
        #printer name = raw
        browseable = No

[print$]
        comment = Printer Driver Download Area
        path = /etc/samba/drivers
        browseable = yes
        guest ok = yes
        read only = yes
        write list = @ntadmin, root, variable

[variable]
        path = /home/variable
        read only = No
and now it just errors saying:
Code:
Jan 11 22:35:01 fs0 smbd[1826]: [2007/01/11 22:35:01, 0] rpc_server/srv_spoolss_nt.c:spoolss_connect_to_client(2583)
Jan 11 22:35:01 fs0 smbd[1826]: spoolss_connect_to_client: unable to connect to SMB server on machine ATHENA. Error was : SUCCESS - 0.
"ATHENA" being the winxp desktop trying to print from,
Does anyone have any idea on this, or have this happen before.

It is driving me crazy!!!

Hello icga,

Is the work group of your Windows box the same as your Linux computer? If you have a Linux computer on the network, you could test the ability to print with it.

I run SuSE 10.1 and these are the default Samba print settings from the server which has a HP LaserJet 5M printer, which all the Linux computers print to.

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/tmp
create mask = 0600
printable = Yes
browseable = No

[print$]
comment = Printer Drivers
path = /var/lib/samba/drivers
write list = @ntadmin, root
force group = ntadmin
create mask = 0664
directory mask = 0775

Na, didnt do do anything, I have changed every parameter I could think of, It either says access denied in windows, or document type failure on the printer server.

Hello icga,

Which distribution of Linux are you using?

I have only done networking with Mandriva and SuSE. There are some basic steps that must be done which include:
The settings in Samba,
The firewall,
and filesharing.

If some of these settings are not correct, you can have difficulty connecting. Of course, you can temporarily shut your firewall down to see if it will connect.

If the problem is with samba, you can subscribe to their mailing list and glean from others' questions. http://us1.samba.org/samba/

If you are using Mandriva or SuSE I can give you some indicators.

I am using centos, a red hat based distro, file sharing with samba works fine, and there is no firewall on that server or between the clients and the server.

Unhappy Similar Issues :-/

Nice to find another's pain with printing from a Windows box to a SaMBa box with "Access denied: unable to connect".

I've tried hosting it from a FC4 machine, and a recent upgrade to FC6 with the same problem. Firewall down didn't help. File sharing works just fine. It finds the printers, but can't print to them.

In /var/log/samba/ there are logs for each machine that tries to connect. The latest messages logged in there, are:

Code:
[2007/01/23 13:19:29, 0] smbd/posix_acls.c:create_canon_ace_lists(1399)
  create_canon_ace_lists: unable to map SID S-1-5-21-789336058-1614895754-1532298954-1003 to uid or gid.
... and in another file:

Code:
[2007/01/19 14:56:10, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(1102)
  mental (131.185.25.48) couldn't find service ::{2227a280-3aea-1069-a2de-08002b30309d}
(Note: mental is the Windows computer's name...)

The "Couldn't find service" would have to be the most common message I see. I'm rather frustrated in trying to fix this - can someone help?
