I don't have any clue why it didn't work, but, as a last resort I've done a yum remove samba, got the sources from, recompiled it all, tweaked the init script from the rpm, paths, files, and now it works just fine with the same folders, permissions, owners, shares, conf, smbusers, smbpasswd.
