Samba Authentication - connecting Windows domain users to Linux share

Anyone out there that could advise me exactly how Samba user authentication works when allowing windows domain users to connect to a Linux Samba share.

I have done this once before as a test but not sure I ever got that working the way I hoped for.

What I would prefer to do is have the windows users authenticated with the windows Active Directory Server but also keep the local Linux users for logging on to the Linux server.

Can Samba be made to use windows groups in the ACL or it is just windows users that can be passed-through to Linux? For example lets say I have a windows user 'Nick' who is a member of the 'Accounts' group, I then create the same user and group in Linux. If a file has RW permissions in Linux for the 'Accounts' group would user 'Nick' be able to read and write to that file? Now I know if the file was owned by 'Nick' I could this would work but that does not allow the files to be accessed by multiple people.

I guess part of what I am asking is can Samba use windows ACLs as part of the linux authentication process?

Thanks,
Nick
